Abstract Reasoning

What is an Abstract Reasoning test?

An abstract reasoning assessment evaluates your capacity to recognize patterns, logical principles, and trends in novel information, independent of learned knowledge. These evaluations aim to measure your analytical and problem-solving abilities through non-verbal material, usually consisting of shapes, patterns, and figures.

In contrast to assessments that gauge learned knowledge or particular skills, abstract reasoning tests are believed to assess more natural capabilities, like fluid intelligence.

Abstract reasoning tests are commonly used in various contexts, such as job recruitment (especially for roles that require quick learning and problem-solving), educational assessments, and in some psychological evaluations. They are particularly valued because they are less influenced by cultural background or education, providing a more level playing field to assess cognitive ability.

Question Breakdown

  • Pattern Sequences: Focuses on mental rotation, directional shifts, and incremental changes in shape orientation.

  • Logical Matrices: Based on 3×3 grids where rules involve logical addition (e.g., Shape A + Shape B = Shape C) or attribute overlapping.

  • Abstract Classification: “Odd one out” tasks based on geometric properties like symmetry, number of sides, or topological features.

  • Abstract Analogies: Visual relationship tasks (e.g., 2D to 3D transitions, point-to-line progressions).
